Our History

The history of Mitsubishi Electric is the history of the development of modern Japan.

Since 1870, when Yataro Iwasaki (1835-1885) founded the first Mitsubishi company, the Mitsubishi Group has grown into a series of independent companies that are now active in almost every industry.

Yataro chose a corporate emblem that combined the three oak leaves of the Tosa coat of arms and the three overlapping diamonds of his family's coat of arms.

This emblem is the origin of the name, Mitsubishi, which means "three diamonds":

Today's Mitsubishi Electric Corporation was established in 1921 as a result of the spinoff of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co.'s (now Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.) transoceanic electric ship motor manufacturing plant in Kobe, Japan.
